その島のこと

an island

作品《その島のこと》は、『牛ヶ首島』『吉和（よしわ）』『瀬居島（せいじま）』『その島へ』の映像作品と、『残されていた二枚の写真』『延縄漁のための漁具「ナワバチ」』『広島県教育委員会が1970年に作成した能地、二窓移住寄留地図』を空間内に配置するとともに、大きな彫りかけの涅槃仏像が残された無人島にまつわる物語が鑑賞者を導くインスタレーションである。

鑑賞者は、作者が拠点とする豊島の自宅に「残された漁具」と「無人島に残された彫りかけの涅槃仏像の写真」を手がかりに、漂流漁民の生活の痕跡と現在の海の景色を重ねたインスタレーション空間の中へ足を踏み入れる。そしてその背景に現れる時間を通して人それぞれの「その島」を想起する。

Through this display of the fishing tool’s left behind in the author’s home in Teshima and photographed carvings that depict the reclining Buddha, the spectator steps into an installation space where contemporary ocean scenery is superimposed over relics that give insight into the region’s fisherman once lived. The time spent in this place may cause each person to recall memories of their own “islands”.
