Local Collaboration / Collaborations With Industry, Schools, and Government

To improve the results of local cultural research and IAMAS’s informational science research, IAMAS collaborates with businesses, educational and non-profit organizations, local authorities, and the local community. Then through presenting the results of our collaborations, we contribute to the local community. Our affiliated facility, RCIC, provides support through consultation on collaboration, coordination with faculty members and projects, and the finalization of research and business contracts.

Practical Examples of Collaboration

IAMAS Kodomo Daigaku

Since 2017 these workshops have been held for children in Ogaki, to improve their ability to practically use various technologies through unique expression experiences that use a variety of media. By extension, we also aim to nurture their ability to create new “things” both tangible and intangible. In 2023 we planned and ran a workshop for them to experience programming known as the “rubber forest”.

Research relating to the complete design of children-oriented lectures and practical teaching materials using AR

The complete design and research for the children-oriented course, the “junior space expert qualification course”, has been developed since 2022 by IAMAS’ innovation studio in collaboration with IAMAS graduate designers. Furthermore, in 2023 a learning and appreciation system that uses AR was set up, and in collaboration with Sorahaku we held discussions about an exhibition space for the children to learn experientially.

Medicos Hiroba Media Lab Seisaku Workshop

A workshop was held in collaboration with IAMAS graduate designers in the “Minna no Mori” Gifu Media Cosmos plaza, with the objective of creating a space for citizens that anybody can freely use known as the “Media Lab”. We conducted research on-site and based on the ideas proposed by participants it led to the production of fixtures to be actually used in the Media Lab.

To Collaborate

At IAMAS, researchers develop unique research achievements through continual collaboration across their varied disciplines. Here, we will explain the flow of collaboration for various expertises in particular art, design, technology, and sociology. At IAMAS, we have classes within the curriculum called “Project-based Research.” Through the gathering of interdisciplinary professors and students, we give birth to the kinds of new solutions and practical research activities that this age demands. Using mostly this method, we accept joint research and development invitations from businesses. Businesses that desire to collaborate, please consult us concerning the content of your desired collaboration and the purpose of your particular enterprise.

Path to Collaboration

The below chart demonstrates the flow leading to collaboration. There are three forms of collaboration: “consultation,” “joint research,” and “commissioned research.” Accordingly, the sharing of results (rights), etc., the apportioning of research or implementation costs, and presence of a researcher from the company will differ. Concerning a specific topic, if you wish to cooperate and develop a business or research, that would be “joint research.” If you wish to independently research at IAMAS that would be “commissioned research.”

Joint and Commissioned Research

At IAMAS, we put in place a system for private sector researchers to work collaboratively with our researchers on a common research topic or project, called “joint research.” Similarly, we have a system for our researchers to work on commissioned research from private industry, called “comissioned research.”

Joint Research

System for industry researchers and our researchers to develop research on a common issue on equal footing. The necessary expenses will be equally distributed. The research will proceed at their respective locations. Private sector researchers can use IAMAS facilities and devices during their joint research with an IAMAS researcher. Businesses can be given a priority license over any patents for inventions, etc. developed by the parties collaboratively.

Commissioned Research

System for our researchers to receive a commission from the private sector to carry out research and then report their results. The necessary fees incurred in this research are the contracting organization’s responsibility. The dispatch of researchers from the private business, etc. is not required. In principle, any patents are held by IAMAS; however, a priority license can be provided.

While covering labor costs incurred by our professors during their research, we also cover the necessary facilities and materials for their research

Expense Responsibility of the Private Business

  1. Direct Expenses
    We ask the business to cover the direct expenses incurred by rewards (to volunteers or participants), travel, materials, and consumables
  2. Indirect Expenses
    These are expenses other than direct costs, and are used for administrative work associated with conducting research and improving the research environment at the University, etc.
