Continue reading by walking! AR Comics in Oasis Park
A new way of manga expression using real space
An IAMAS student as part of their masters research managed and planned an event to broadcast the manga work they made, “AR comics”, at an exhibition that spanned around Oasis Park. Through the collaboration with Oasis Park, they aimed to make this research more practical and developed by having many people experience the park and by conducting surveys of those who experienced the park.

Process
We received a request from Oasis Park about the operations and planning of an event that would make use of the park which developed into a collaboration with us. The purpose of this project was to examine the possibilities and significance of media expression in tourist attractions by developing and implementing IAMAS research in a form that utilizes Oasis Park. Oasis Park experimented with the places that could be used and tourist resources, and whilst our university gave suggestions concerning the research and exhibition method, discussions about the plan were held and then the project was realized.
Research taken on
Masters Research “AR Comic”
Through Shintaro Imatani’s (2nd year masters student) master’s research, AR is being used to search for the future state of manga by creating a new style of manga that can be read with smartphones, tablets, etc.. You can experience a new type of presence and sense of immersion never seen before in manga until now through the characters linked and positioned in the real scenery around you, story development,etc..
Through this collaboration which used a large bridge at the Seseragi plaza at Oasis Park, the AR comic “bridge” was created, and it was unveiled to the public through the AR/VR creative platform known as STYLY. The AR comic “bridge” focuses on the method for the panel layout when the manga is brought into AR. It is an artwork that has established a system which allows the reader to walk through the book by taking the reader’s walking movement as the progression of time. Further, it also incorporates a story related to the location of the bridge and a looping development by taking advantage of the symmetrical shape of the bridge by folding it back.Through this experiment and from the survey of those who tried out the AR comic, he was able to get new insights for his next AR comic creation.
